Zbigniew Mikołejko „Kwintet“ („Quintette“)

Kwintet (Quintette) – written in the late summer of 2018 in Brwinow, Lidzbark Warmiński and Bydgoszcz – is not the first poetic work of the philosopher and religion historian. Earlier on, the Mikołowski Institute published two volumes of his works – Gorzkie żale (Bitter Lamentations; 2017) and Heilsberg, to miasto (Heilberg – this city; 2018); and “Twórczość”, “Borussia” and Olsztyn’s Almanach 2018 have published large sets of his poems as well. The Quintette poem refers to the renowned poetic cycle Four Quartets by Thomas Stearns Eliot, published in 1943. At the same time, it is an attempt to answer to Eliot’s masterpiece in a modern, literary and philosophical manner. The English-American poet, exploring the places significant in his life, analyses them from the perspective of the universe. However, the perspective in Quintette has been inverted and the description of the world is achieved by summoning some specific places and inner, subjective experiences that constitute peculiar, Dantesque-like circles:  nature mutilated by the presence of humans, suburbs, a small town, a large metropolis (Rome). In the centre of the circles there is the figure of Job – the fellow of all the suffering ones, of all the ones who experience incomprehensible, painful absurdity of things. The illustrations have been made by Marta Filipiak.
